The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) provides over 10,000 standards governing a wide variety of safety issues, in many different arenas, including industry, manufacturing, construction – and – healthcare. ANSI Z136 is the committee that writes, revises, and manages national standards for laser safety in all of it’s diverse applications. SSC (standards sub-committee) 3 is responsible for laser safety in Healthcare. Penny Smalley has held a seat on that committee since 1988, and has served as secretary, and currently as vice-chair. As our ICSP secretary of the Board of Directors, she requested a change of her membership designation, from consultant, to representative for ICSP, and requested that designation become perpetual. In this way, the seat is named for our organization, rather than for a named individual, and can be handed to whoever may be interested and qualified to serve in that capacity. ICSP now has a permanent seat, a vote, and will no doubt continue to revise and manage section 7 which addresses the non-beam hazard of what the standard refers to as LGAC (laser generated airborne contaminants), for years to come. We thank our colleagues at ANSI for offering ICSP the opportunity to be recognized as a contributor to national level safety standards.
